Age of Zombies 2 is the upcoming sequel to Age of Zombies and the fifth mainline title in the Barry Steakfries series, developed by Halfbrick Studios. The game is currently under beta-testing.

Plot[]

The game takes place sometime after the events of the original Age of Zombies.

Barry Steakfries wakes up in a space ship built as a trap by Professor Brains. The corridors are overrun by the zombies, the navigation system is broken, and the ship is moving straight into a black hole. Some of the scientists are also trapped in the ship, including Craig. He tells Barry that Brains uses a time machine to send zombies back in time and ruin history. He gets one of the ship's own time machines to work and sends Barry into the Prehistoric times to get parts and fix the ship before it gets crushed by the black hole.

Gameplay[]

The game takes place in a 3D environment. The controls are similar to the original Age of Zombies with the grenades function being replaced by a dash button that allows Barry Steakfries to roll in a direction and move around faster. While the game no longer has crates with weapons to help the player out, Barry can wield three weapons at the same time and swap between them on the go.

The player progresses through the game by completing missions given by Craig. Because of this, levels no longer require killing every zombie possible (aside from special arenas within the levels) and have a time limit, after which a radiation begins. Barry can leave the level at any time through the portal at the beginning, with all mission progress being saved.

Development[]

The game was known to be in consideration since at least July 2021. When asked about their possible future projects in an interview with PocketGamer.biz, Halfbrick's product manager Jason Maundrell replied that it's too early to share many of their ideas, but they have plans for a sequel to Age of Zombies.[1]

The game was publicly announced to be in development on December 9, 2021 through newsletters in various Halfbrick games, including Jetpack Joyride and Dan The Man, although not much was revealed about the game aside from the new Zombie T-Rex icon and the screenshot presenting the game as a 3D twin-stick shooter. The announcement also had a link to Halfbrick's website, where you could sign up for a future playtest.[2]

On July 30, 2022, demo gameplay footage of Age of Zombies 2 was uploaded on the YouTube channel Swift Hero playing through the game's first chapter, Prehistoric Zone, demonstrating various new ideas and mechanics, and revealing the game's plot.[3] On September 16, another video was uploaded demonstrating a newer build of the game.[4]
